As said by the Cambridge Dictionary a theocracy is a country that is ruled by religious leaders. Today many nations are still lead by this ideology, countries like Israel or Afghanistan. Although, in my opinion religion could be both useful and controversial often in the world. As in late 1600’s in Salem, Massachusetts the population was completely controlled by Puritanism. The leaders of this religious community had unanimous power over the town; and as in Puritanism the word of the bible was taken in a literal way. The Salem Witch Trials have been a discussion subject for many years because of their suspiciousness and misleading arguments against women. I believe that these cases were not only about religion, but also an issue regarding gender. Women were suspected of being witches and of doing impure acts, this was completely unfair considering that these women had no freedom at all. Women living in Salem were bound to be housewives who prayed all day long, cooked, and had no fun at all. This violent acts by religious leaders show how contradictory times were.
Whilst the bible preached that people should live in peace and British wanted to created a utopia-like society in America, ruled by religion, they also killed innocent women and proved the contrary to what they propagated.
