After reading Bruce Bethke’s short story “Cyberpunk” I realized that the voice of an author is clearly portrayed in his writing. “Cyberpunk” is all about tone and delivering a message to an audience connected with technology. The tone in this story reveals the supposed future of spelling and literature according to the author. Also, how the main character (Mikey) uses his abilities as a hacker to blackmail his parents and a bank.
Throughout the whole story the author employs innumerable invented words such as caffix referring to coffee and microterm as a tool similar to the computer today. The continual use of these words has extreme importance in Mr.Bethke’s work. This happens mostly because of the recurrence the author does to futuristic subjects and technology. As commonly known, the use of word contractions is very notorious nowadays. People are getting used to shorten phrases and words such as saying BRB (Be right back) and ASAP (As soon as possible). Basically, in “Cyberpunk” Bruce Bethke wants to depict a future society by deepening into the life of an adolescent influenced by the viciousness of technology.
